After Reading 'Bullshit Jobs': How AI and Low Interest Rates Evolved Meaningless Work Without Eliminating It
After finishing David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs: A Theory, the most satisfying part was how he brought the unspoken absurdity of workplace dynamics into the open. The book accurately draws the line between "shit jobs" (low-pay, high-stress, yet indispensable to society, like frontline customer service) and "bullshit jobs" (high-pay, high-status, yet the world functions better if they disappear). However, this book only reveals the tip of the iceberg.
The Blind Spot of Definition: Who Dares to Admit They Do Bullshit Work?¶
Graeber defines bullshit jobs as work where "even the practitioner feels it is meaningless." But if we break this down into a four-quadrant matrix of "Self vs. Others," we find that for survival and dignity, many people forcefully attach ritualistic value to their work and will never admit its uselessness publicly. Relying solely on subjective self-reports will never yield an objective definition.
More importantly, the author leans heavily on anthropology and political philosophy to explain causes while ignoring macroeconomics and financial mechanisms:
- Capital Abundance & Extreme Efficiency: The Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) era brought cheap capital, combined with exploding efficiency for a minority via automation, enabling companies to remain profitable overall even while maintaining large numbers of non-productive positions.
- Managerial Feudalism: Organizations blindly chase KPIs like "managing more people makes you more powerful." When senior employees slack off, new positions are created, layering redundancy upon redundancy.
A Massive Stress Test: From Twitter Layoffs to AI Redundancy¶
Elon Musk slashing nearly 80% of Twitter's (X) workforce without crashing the platform served as an extreme stress test. This accelerated a collective awakening across tech — trim down to the bone first, then patch wherever issues arise. While this carries friction costs, it forces enterprises to see which links are truly replaceable.
However, technological progress cannot eliminate bullshit jobs, because the essence of bullshit jobs is "organizational politics," and AI will merely evolve them into new forms:
- AI Duct-Tapers: When managers blindly pursue "AI Adoption Rate KPIs," employees faced with half-baked AI outputs secretly fix them manually, then re-run the process through AI to perform for management.
- Painless Digital Waste: AI automatically generates analysis decks that no human reads, while another AI automatically summarizes and replies "Received." No humans suffer in this loop; redundancy is cleanly offloaded and automated into vast, invisible resource waste.
When AI makes management believe they are omnipotent, it will only spawn more redundant positions tasked with "managing AI tools." As long as we continue regarding "control and busyness" as symbols of organizational power, this absurd workplace play will never lower its curtain.
